HERE’S HOW to get started
One of the prerequisites for SOM is to be serving in a ministry at Calvary South OC before you start the program.
So, if you aren’t already serving somewhere, be sure to complete and submit a volunteer packet, and then start serving - anywhere! (You can also pick up a printed packet at church.)
Philosophy of Calvary SOM

Why Calvary SOM?
It has been said that, ministry is more often caught than taught. At Calvary SOM, we seek to cultivate the spiritual development of students that they might catch the vision for ministry – whether at home, within the body of Christ, or for going out into the world.
We accomplish this through:
Deepening students understanding and application of God’s Word.
Encouraging students in developing a servant’s heart.
Placing a high emphasis upon equipping students for the ministry of God’s Word.
Providing an atmosphere for like-minded men who desire to be used of God through discovering and developing their spiritual gifts and calling.
Who is it for?
Men who desire to discover God’s call upon their life to serve Him.
Men who are willing to count the cost of discipleship by entering into a life of service that is characterized by a love for God, a love for His Word, and a love for His people.
What to expect?
Calvary SOM provides both classroom instruction and practical ministry opportunities. Emphasis will be placed upon the application of biblical doctrine, study methods, and personal spiritual growth.
Academics
Academics will be in the form of classroom instruction (both live and recorded media) and independent reading.
Practical Christian Ministry
While there is a high emphasis placed upon biblical studies, we seek to immerse students in the work of ministry. We believe both go hand-in-hand. Ministry is first and foremost serving God and His people.
What happens after I complete the program?
Completing the program at Calvary SOM does not automatically qualify students for ministry. This is something only the Lord can do. We believe the Lord qualifies the called. Although we do not offer any position or placement in ministry upon completion, each student is given an opportunity to be faithful unto the Lord through both academic studies and practical serving opportunities while at Calvary SOM. As each student puts his best effort into what God has called him to, we believe the Lord will be faithful to lead him into the ministry He has purposed for each student.
General Information
Admission
Requirements
The applicant must be a man of good moral character and reputation, which is to be evidenced in his life, marriage, family, and church.
The applicant must be actively serving in a ministry at CSOC (at least once per week) for a minimum of two months immediately prior to start of program.
The applicant must also have a solid, practical working knowledge of the Bible, as he will be engaged in learning to both apply and communicate it to others.
Procedure
The applicant must submit a completed application and the required reference forms. The application must be completed in its entirety.
Deadline
The deadline for application is September 10th, 2023. EXTENDED!
Time and Location of Classes
Classes are held from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., Mondays and Thursdays, at Calvary South OC.
Commitment
Each student must be sure God is calling them to Calvary SOM as it requires a high level of commitment. Calvary SOM is designed to be an intense and focused time of both study and service. Students should come with an expectation to finish what they start. Consideration must be made for other obligations and responsibilities such as marriage, family, and work. While the program is designed to accommodate those working a regular job, students should be prepared to spend upwards of 20-30 hours of time per week (including class time).

Course Descriptions
Fall Term Courses
John Randall (Discipleship)
Pastor John will take students through each chapter of the course textbook with an emphasis on discipling students in the area of ministry. This course will involve interactive participation.
Inductive Bible Study
This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of studying and interpreting the Bible using the Observation-Interpretation-Application method.
Christian Doctrine
An introductory examination of some of the major doctrines of the Christian faith. This class will cover topics such as Bibliology, Theology Proper, Soteriology, Eschatology, etc.
Winter Term Courses
John Randall (Pastoral Epistles)
Pastor John will teach verse-by-verse through the letters of 1&2 Timothy and Titus. Emphasis will be placed on practical pastoral ministry.
Introduction to Apologetics
An introduction to worldview apologetics to better equip the student to share his faith in a modern, secular world.
Expository Preaching & Teaching
This class will emphasize the preparation and delivery of the expository message. Classes will include both instruction and practical labs.
Both Term Courses
Chuck Smith – (Ministry & The Church)
Recorded video lecture series on ministry given by Pastor Chuck. Emphasis will be placed on the Philosophy of ministry, Calvary distinctives, and other topics, as he teaches through the Book of Acts.
Orientation/Instruction in Ministry
Guest pastors will share on special topics each week.
Practical Ministry
Students are required to serve a minimum of 4 hours each week in areas of ministry at CSOC as designated by instructor.
Men’s Ministry Koinonia
Weekly participation and small group experience within CSOC Men’s Ministry will provide students a model for leading small groups for study and prayer.
Weekly Chapel
Students will be required to attend and take notes from either Sunday morning or Wednesday evening service weekly.
Independent Book Reading
Selected books will be assigned for reading throughout the term that are helpful for spiritual growth and preparation for ministry.

Refund Policy
A 50% refund will be granted if the student withdraws during the first week of school. Refunds are contingent upon proper notification by the student. Students must notify the school in writing or in person. No refund will be granted after the first week of school.
